Interesting article Glenn, many struggle with trying to keyword stuff, optimize multiple header tags (h1,h2,h3), title tags and url rewrite tools.

The real hard work in SEO is working to create real world relationships with the people that matter, gaining their trust and yours and working together to build each other's online presence. There is nothing like good old honest hard work to gain respect!

Rachael,

I reckon viewing how somebody else is having success with something often gives the best tips so become a fan of Altitude Real Estate and check how they do it. Very impressive stuff - http://www.facebook.com/Altitudere

In regards to facebook pages - we haven't had as much success with this as with twitter.

We created a facebook account under the Principals name -then a fan page off that.

Greg, thanks for pointing out you cant have business accounts - I wasn't aware of that and was hoping to set one up as we are having the problem that if we want to "add friends" we are adding through the principals name rather than Beach & Bay Realty. We are a little worried this would lead to people leaving more personal messages rather than business/real estate related comments.

So far we only have 25 fans, mostly friends and family. Do you have any tips for facebook specifically? Are you having success with this?

Greg and Glenn,

Thanks guys. Thats 2 down and 4 to go. Hopefully there are a few agencies that are investing the time into improving their SEO. There really is no excuse now as principals or someone in their office can follow along and apply some basic but fundamental changes to their SEO which will make a difference.

I made that change Greg, thanks for picking that up. As you pointed out, we had done it correctly but in the article I called it an account not a page. I have seen lots of businesses create facebook accounts and so far no one has had their account closed although as you point out that is a possibility.

Other than assuring the future of your account the real advantage of creating a page for your business is that is exactly what a page is designed for. Facebook has updated the analytics for pages so you can track just how your business is performing. Facebook will probably expand on this even further over time and these tools are not available for normal facebook accounts. In simple terms a Facebook Page is what is fit for the purpose for a business..

Brilliant article Glenn. One small thing if I may.

Facebook don't allow businesses to register accounts & you mention creating a "Facebook Account for you and your agency".

This should be "Facebook Account for you and a Facebook Fan Page for your agency". This statement would then reflect exactly what you have created for your agency on Facebook.

Glenn, I only mention this because in the past month I've seen an agent create a business account on Facebook instead of a Fan Page. Unfortunately, because it is in breach of Facebook's Terms it will only be a matter of time before Facebook removes that agent's account.
