Got yourself a super fast broadband connection? Well if you believed Bigpond/Optus and others that claim in advertising that super fast broadband at 256k per second is in actual fact broadband……….. think again. So here is a little primer.

1k = 0.001 Megabits per second
100k = .10 Megabits per second
1000k = 1 Megabits per second

Australian download speeds for broadband average just over 1 megabits per second, this is embarrassing compared to overseas countries averages.

Australian Internet service provider Internode has released ADSL2+ broadband services on Telstra’s Network allowing it to sell broadband at speeds up to 20 times faster than normal broadband. Internode uses the Agile Communications Network.

Many of my Agents in regional Australia still cannot get ADSL broadband and have to suffer the use of the lesser ISDN product.

But what our perception of broadband is and what actually constitutes broadband are two entirely different things. My feeling is that in 10 years time we will be laughing at what we call broadband ….and that is a Telstra offering topping out at 1500kb a second.

Primus has finally become the first company to release true broadband in Australia with speeds reaching a scorching 6 megabytes per second - 4 times faster than Telstra Bigpond’s highest speed plan.
