Getting your site right for Google

3 minute read

Despite what your web developer may tell you, there are no sure fire ways of getting to number one in Google. So often I see web developers claim to have un locked the Google secret!

You know what I do? I search for these web developers in Google and guess what? Your right, these so called experts appear no-where!

However there are the basics that all websites must follow. If your website is built in frames or developed by realestate.com.au, domain.com.au or justlisted.com.au you are out of luck. This is because as soon as you look for properties on your website you end up getting re-directed to their website. So that counts you out. This is the same for franchise sites.

However if you own your own website and have your data integrated seamlessly in your site and under your domain you could be a winner.

Overview
You can view your meta tags by going to a page on your site and on the browser menu select VIEW and then source. It should look something like this:

Example:
TITLE:Propertypoint Tasmania :: Tasmanian Real Estate Property Guide
KEYWORDS: property, real, estate, listings, private, sale, for, 4sale, guide, how, to add, business, market, research”>
DESCRIPTION: Largest Tasmanian real estate with over 8000 property listings online, from Hobart, Launceston, Burnie, Devonport, Kingston, Huonville and throughout all of Tasmania”

Each and every page must have slightly unique titles, description and keywords in your meta tags. Yes that includes your property listing pages – that is if you want Google to pick them up

Rule Number One – TITLES
Titles: Include information about the page in your title but make sure it is no longer than 60-70 characters.

Example: Propertypoint Tasmania :: Tasmanian Real Estate Property GuideRule Number Two – DESCRIPTION
Your description should provide information about that page.

Example: Largest Tasmanian real estate with over 8000 property listings online, from Hobart, Launceston, Burnie, Devonport, Kingston, Huonville and throughout all of Tasmania

Rule Number Three – KEYWORDS
Your keywords should provide information separated by commas

Example: property, real, estate, listings, private, sale, for, 4sale, guide, how, to add, business, market, research

Note: Google does not really do a lot with keywords as far as indexing your site goes, but other search engines do.

Your developer should know how to automatically generate these for your listings from the information you input into each listing, an example of this would be the title and description of the property = title and description of the page, I also like to include listing numbers and suburb, state data.

If your develop does not know how to do this or wants to charge you high fees for this, just tell them that this is pretty standard and to just do it for FREE or lose you as a client.
