Ask Peter: What do you think of the new Bigpond Movie Downloads Service?

2 minute read

Well, when I first received this question I thought….what has it got to do with real estate? Not much, however it does go back to a recent post on this site. Thinking about your user!

I wish there was something positive I could say about Telstra, but unfortunately every decision they seem to make will only make life worse for them in the future.

The latest dud offering is the Bigpond Movie download service. Why is it a dud? Because it does not cater for consumer needs. What would you want to do with a downloaded movie? I…. want to be able to download a movie and watch it, I don’t care if it is disabled after 24/48 or 72 hours! I want to be able to watch it in any manner I choose.

Bigpond’s answer is to offer movie downloads, which is great, but they limit your use to your computer. This is just plumb dumb. How many people want to snuggle up and watch a movie on their PC?

With a catalogue over over 1000 movies available and a simple way of downloading them, you would think this would be a winner, but only allowing the use on a PC will mean that in the short term this service will be confined to a small amount of echelon users.

Don’t worry………….. Telstra know this and is just offering it to be a first mover. Hmmm, interesting – Telstra seem to be a mover in anything that does not effect current revenues (read VOIP, Handsets, lower call costs, lower line rentals).

The simple lesson in this is that Internet users demand choice, and having to watch a movie on a PC is NOT a cunsumer choice. I keep telling anyone that will listen, the Internet allows consumers choice – NOT companies. Give the consumer what they want and you will be rewarded in the long term!

Please Note: I will not answer questions that have nothing to do with real estate – unless of course – I can see a tie in.

I used to use bigpond movies and thought it was ok, it’s more of a rental service than buying a product though as the file deletes itself 1 day after you watch it. It’s not all bad though I use a media center pc with front projection so a pc is ideal. I know what you mean about choice though.
